Middle East Update
Ceasefires, Shifting Powers, and Rising Threats
Since November 27, a temporary ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah has brought relative calm to Northern Israel. Although Hezbollah has not fully honored the agreement, tensions have eased. The Lebanese Army is attempting to reduce Hezbollah’s presence near the border, while the IDF remains stationed in Southern Lebanon to ensure the ceasefire is enforced.
In a dramatic shift, rebel forces in Syria have seized control of Damascus, toppling the Assad regime and forcing Bashar al-Assad into exile. However, concerns are rising as Syria’s new Transitional President, Ahmed Hussein al-Sharaa (also known as Abu Muhammad al-Julani), is the former leader of Al-Qaeda’s affiliate in Syria. His group, Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham, advocates for jihad and Sharia law, casting uncertainty over Syria’s future and its relations with Israel.
In response, Israel has deployed IDF forces to the Golan Heights, creating a security buffer to guard its borders. Some Druze villages have requested annexation by Israel to avoid falling under Sunni Islamist control. The IDF has also taken proactive steps by dismantling abandoned Syrian military outposts to prevent weapons from being looted or used against Israel.
Meanwhile in Gaza, the IDF continues operations against Hamas. Though the terrorist group has suffered major losses, it still refuses to surrender. An estimated 98 Israeli hostages remain in captivity, with their condition unknown. Ongoing ceasefire negotiations are underway but remain contentious, as the deal includes the potential release of thousands of Palestinian terrorists—a significant security risk for Israel.
In Yemen, the Houthi rebels have emerged as the most aggressive anti-Israel front. In a recent attack, two ballistic missiles struck the Tel Aviv area, bypassing defense systems. Miraculously, although the missiles landed in populated areas—including a school and a children’s playground—no lives were lost. Only material damage occurred. Praise God for His protection.
